Physical Education

The staff within the physical education department are a mixture of youth and mature experienced staff. They are a dedicated and supportive team with a range of sport specialisms. Specialist knowledge is shared amongst staff to ensure that each member of the team is able to competently teach the full range of national curriculum activity areas. The key aim of encouraging all students to develop a lifelong interest in sport and regular physical activity is reflected in the approach adopted by staff within lessons and extracurricular activities. Lessons are focused on providing students with the opportunity to experience success and understand what they need to do to develop their skill and overall performance levels. Lesson content reflects the abilities of the individual children, and patient student support in the encouragement of skill development and student selfdiscipline is a constant feature provided by all staff.

The curriculum offered to the students reflects the excellent sport facilities located onsite. A broad and progressive programme is followed by both boys and girls including activities such as indoor climbing, trampolining, football, hockey, rugby, volleyball, dance, badminton, gymnastics, basketball, cricket, rounders, athletics and fitness training using cardiovascular and resistance machines. The teaching resources and facilities include a dedicated classroom with computers and interactive whiteboard; two staff office spaces; a 6 badminton court sports hall with a 10 metre high by 30 metre wide climbing wall; a dance studio; a fitness suite with technogym equipment supported by the wellness system; a full size floodlit third generation artificial playing area; a floodlit muga areas with 6 netball and 7 tennis courts, and grass playing fields.

Certification courses operate across key stages 4 and 5 and students generally either achieve their predicted grade or exceed expectations. Level 3 OCR National certificate and Diploma courses in sport are offered within KS5, whilst at KS4 two qualifications are offered: the Level 2 OCR National Certificate in Sport, and GCSE PE.

Both specialist and nonspecialist teachers offer club and representative extracurricular opportunities in a range of sports and activities, with occasional field trips to High Borrans outdoor activity centre. School teams play in local and county league and cup competitions, and regional athletic and golf events. Our goal is to provide students with every opportunity to develop and demonstrate their talents and further their interests.
