Boys outdoor lessons during the autumn and spring terms

Outdoor lessons during this time will take place on the grass playing fields, the artificial astro (3g) playing surface, and within Wallsend Dene.  Lessons will take place outdoors even when there is a degree of moisture on the playing surfaces and/or the outside temperature may be cold.  For these reasons there is no clear stipulation on the colour of kit worn or its type because it is important that the boys wear clothing that is appropriate to the prevailing weather conditions.

Boys may wear any type of sports wear e.g. Newcastle United replica kits or rugby jersey’s; shorts and/or tracksuit bottoms; a sweat shirt and hat/gloves when the temperature begins to dip.  The area where we do require compulsion is on footwear and wearing of protective equipment.  Studded boots are essential for lessons taking place on the grass playing areas and when the astro is wet.  They provide effective grip that can reduce the chances of slipping and causing an injury, and they also offer protection against other players who are wearing studded footwear.  Shin pads also provide protection when playing football and indeed are deemed a compulsory part of a player’s kit by the Football Association.  A mouth guard will not offer complete protection in the event of a direct hit to a student’s mouth area in activities such as hockey and rugby; however it will reduce the severity of any injury.  For this reason we recommend their use.

Example Equipment:

Shin Guards Football Boots  Gum Shields

Hygiene

Lessons will involve periods of intense exercise and on occasion be conducted outdoors when the weather is inclement and the playing surface muddy.  For these reasons all students will be encouraged to follow the basic hygiene guidelines of showering after exercise. In this respect a towel is considered part of the PE kit and should be brought to every lesson.  Students with foot ailments that are contagious must ensure protective measures are taken prior to showering.  A change of underwear and socks is also necessary following showering.

Girl's PE Kit

PE kit for Year 7 & 8 consists of:

  • Black polo shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Appropriate footwear (no plimsoles)
  • Hair bobble (if necessary)

From Year 9 onwards students are allowed to wear BLACK tracksuit bottoms for lessons, all other kit remains the same.

Jewellery

Please note that jewellery is not allowed to be worn and earrings MUST be removed for lessons, they cannot be covered with plasters.

Extra Curricular Activities

Procedures for fixtures:

At the start of the year parents will be given a consent form asking for their permission for students to participate in events and fixtures both at Burnside and at other venues. This will also include information on medical conditions and emergency contact details.

Home fixtures:

Players will be informed by the member of staff responsible for that team that they will be playing a fixture and be given details of venue, start time etc.
Parents will be allowed to come and watch games but they need to report to main reception and sign in. Parents will be expected to behave in an appropriate and sporting like manner at all times.

Away fixtures:

Again players will be informed of the details of fixtures and an approximate time of arrival back at school will be given. In addition to this office staff will be provided with a list of the pupils whom are playing in the fixture / event along with all information (such as venue, approximate time of return etc) which can be given to parents if required. In the event of students being delayed staff will allow students to contact parents / guardians on their mobiles.

Results and fixtures will be displayed on the internet also.
